As women, we understand the importance of taking care of our bodies. Some of us visit the spa year around, not only to escape, indulge and renew, but more importantly, we enjoy how we look and feel when keeping up with spa visits. As we approach spring, the excitement builds for wearing sandals. This season’s major shoe trends are bold colors and prints. This is perfect for the women with simple wardrobes; adding a pop of color or print will give you a chance to tap in to the eclectic side of fashion while still keeping the simplicity.

Chemical Peel Series... A Client's Perspective

Unsure of the benefits of chemical peels? Read below to follow one client's journey through the process to clearer skin.

Growing up I always had a problem with acne. Knowing that it was hereditary, I figured there was no way to help control the breakouts. Yet, I decided I would do my best to clear my skin. Birth control pills, proactive, retin-A micro and antibiotics became part of my life. After trying 3 different dermatologists, I finally found one that offered all the right products. My skin cleared and I knew the products were working; family and friends who knew the challenges I had with my skin immediately noticed the difference.

As excited as I was at the age of 28 to see my skin at its best, money became an issue. Sixty dollar co-pays and $100 - $200 monthly prescriptions filled, brought me to the decision to no longer see my dermatologist. Let all the prescriptions run out and I would figure out the rest. Over the counter topical washes became my lifestyle. A 3-step acne wash, Cetaphil, Dove and finally Neutrogena were the products used to help with my lifetime struggle of bad skin.

Fortunately, I was offered an opportunity to trial a facial peel series performed by Chyvonne Shackelford, esthetician, at 3rd Element Spa & Salon. Six weeks ago the process began and six weeks later I'm going to miss every moment. Not only was it a time of relaxation, but it was a time to begin the process of clearer skin. We started with a cranberry peel followed by 5 weeks of salicylic acid peels. The cranberry peel, a mild fruit-based peel, was an introduction to begin the process of opening pores and evening the skin tone. I knew by week one I wouldn't see an immediate difference, yet I trusted the process.

By week two the salicylic peel was used and immediately I felt the difference in potency, but realized the slight discomfort was doing what it needed to open pores and even the skin. Furthermore, after the cooling mask was applied everything felt like normal. I was given a soap to use day and night as part of the process, with a moisturizer (my own) to follow. After about the 3rd week I could see a difference. Less breakouts, maybe one during my cycle but as women with loads of hormones that is bound to happen. Yet, my sister even said, "your skin looks good and mine is breaking out." I told her to try the peels for clear, even skin.

Every person’s skin is different, however if acne has been or is currently something you have struggled with I recommend you call 3rd Element for details on the treatment. And I'm not done with the process; I am now in the maintenance phase that will occur every 3 weeks for the next four months, so you'll hear from me again.
